Kapu Creations was born in 2002 out of pure necessity — and a little obsession. Steve Kryworuka wanted authentic tiki decor for his home bar, the Kapu Lounge, back in Phoenix. The problem? Vintage-quality tiki pieces cost a fortune. So he did what any self-respecting tiki enthusiast with too much coffee and a problem-solving brain would do: he built his own.
Twenty-plus years later, that same DIY spirit is still the soul of every piece that comes out of the Kapu workshop in Kingston, Tennessee.
One Person, Start to Finish
There's no factory here. No fulfillment center. Every chandelier, lamp, statue, and magnet is designed, built, finished, and packed by Steve — the same guy who answers your messages and thanks you for your reviews. If it has a Kapu Creations label on it, Steve touched it. Probably more than once.
The tools of the trade include a CNC machine, a 3D printer, fabric, resin, drills, sanders, irons, and whatever else gets the job done. The wood pendant lamps take 4–7 days to complete — resin cures on its own schedule, and that's just how it goes. Smaller pieces can be ready in hours. Custom and commission work is always welcome.
Tiki Is a Tradition
Steve has been deep in the tiki world since 2000, right in the thick of the second wave of tiki revival. The design inspiration draws from the greats — Oceanic Arts, Witco, Rolly Crump, Marc Davis — while staying distinctly its own thing. These aren't reproductions. They're new pieces built in an old spirit.
Kapu Creations pieces have ended up in tiki bars and home lounges across the country, including real commercial installs for working bars and businesses. Accessible pricing matters here — tiki shouldn't only be for people who can drop $500 on a lamp.
The Unlikely Outpost
Kingston, Tennessee is not exactly a hotbed of Polynesian pop culture. But the pieces that come out of this workshop have found their way into tiki rooms coast to coast — proof that good craft doesn't care much about geography.
Steve's day job is in IT and ecommerce (30+ years in tech). The long-term goal is for Kapu Creations to stand on its own — every sale, every five-star review, every new follower is a step in that direction. This isn't a trend. It's a calling.
